In 2024, IEEE proudly celebrated its 140th anniversary, a milestone that honored our legacy while looking ahead to new opportunities. Founded by visionary engineers committed to applying science and engineering to real-world problems, IEEE has stayed true to that mission, helping improve everyday life and society as a whole.
IEEE has long connected the global technology community through conferences, publications, technical societies, standards development and continuing education. Our platforms bring together the people and ideas that fuel discovery, support professional growth and drive breakthrough innovation.
IEEE publications are cited three times more often by the top 50 global patenting organizations than any other publisher, reflecting the trust placed in our research. We publish three of the top five journals in artificial intelligence, automation and computer systems, fields that are transforming industries and lives.
With over 1,100 active standards, IEEE helps shape the technologies behind the internet, blockchain, the metaverse and other digital ecosystems. Our standards guide responsible development in emerging areas, such as AI and online child safety. By setting clear frameworks, IEEE helps ensure new technologies are developed with ethics, safety, reliability and long-term impact in mind.
IEEE’s global influence also extends to shaping public policy and ensuring that emerging technologies are developed responsibly. We continue to work with policymakers and stakeholders to ensure technology serves the public interest and reflects our shared values.
In 2024, IEEE focused on strengthening its foundation for the future by prioritizing improving retention of young members and expanding engagement with industry. These priorities reflect our commitment to evolving alongside the needs of the global technology community and ensuring IEEE remains a valuable resource across all stages of a professional’s journey. Efforts in both areas are helping shape how we deliver value, foster collaboration and build meaningful connections across sectors.
To support long-term impact, the IEEE Board of Directors approved a refreshed set of strategic goals in 2024 to guide the organization through 2030. While our mission, vision and core values remain unchanged, these new goals strengthen alignment across the organization. They emphasize advancing science and technology, promoting responsible innovation, inspiring intellectual curiosity and supporting interdisciplinary collaboration and professional development.
As we look ahead, we are building on 140 years of innovation, leadership and service. IEEE will continue to evolve, lead and support the individuals and communities driving technology forward, always guided by our mission to advance technology for the benefit of humanity.
