IEEE Celebrates 140 Years

In 2024, IEEE marked its 140th anniversary, celebrating the remarkable contributions of its members and volunteers worldwide. Since its origin, IEEE has helped shape the world of technology—from computing and standards to Wi-Fi and cell phones—up to the latest AI applications. To commemorate this milestone, IEEE released Inspiring Technology: 34 Breakthroughs, a 144-page e-book spanning nearly a century and a half of electrical engineering innovation and IEEE history.

IEEE President Tom Coughlin hosted an event to celebrate IEEE’s significant history, recognizing the members and volunteers who have helped shape the world of technology. The IEEE Foundation featured its inaugural “IEEE Foundation Day,” highlighting its role as the heart of IEEE charitable giving and philanthropy and acknowledging the donors that make it possible.

Expanding Industry Engagement

To promote collaboration and identify engagement opportunities with industry, IEEE leadership met with corporations in Silicon Valley in the United States and around the world to showcase the benefits and impact of IEEE. Building these connections helps amplify the valuable resources that IEEE provides to corporations, ranging from professional development to access to IEEE standards.

The IEEE Standards Association offers corporations, as well as universities and governments, a membership option that enables participants to engage and influence technology development.

Empowering Professionals in STEM

IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) is driving global initiatives to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields. Through innovative approaches like the Riko-chan manga series, a collaboration with the IEEE Japan Council that showcases a young girl solving problems through STEM, WIE was successful in actively engaging the next generation of female engineers. Additionally, events like the 2024 IEEE WIE China Leadership Summit and WIE Industry Forum brought together influential professionals to discuss digital innovation, career development and workplace engagement. These platforms provide crucial networking, mentorship and skill-building opportunities while advocating to support the advancement of women in engineering.

IEEE Supports CHIPS Act with Events Across the U.S.

IEEE-USA’s “Packaging Chips with CHIPS” event, held at Arizona State University, brought together thought leaders from chip packaging and design companies and government policymakers to discuss the chip packaging industry in light of the historic CHIPS Act. The CHIPS Act is legislation intended to drive America’s semiconductor industry. The initiative extended to Little Rock, Arkansas; Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Huntsville, Alabama where the IEEE-USA Innovation, Workforce and Research Conference (IWRC) delved deeper into the US$56 billion CHIPS Act and other government programs that promote innovation and entrepreneurship. Additionally, IEEE participated with other experts in a congressional briefing for the U.S. House of Representatives evaluating the CHIPS Act legislation.

IEEE Advances Clean Tech Solutions Worldwide

The IEEE Future Directions SusTech Initiative, in partnership with the 2024 IEEE SusTech Conference, hosted a hybrid workshop on low-carbon building materials and architecture at Portland State University. This event was part of a broader suite of efforts, including the work of IEEE members showcased on the IEEE Climate Change website as well as webinars organized by the IEEE Technology Center for Climate, based in the IEEE Vienna Global Office. Together, these initiatives highlight IEEE’s commitment to advancing climate-focused innovation.
